Some of the leadership of the National League were promoting another major league, the American Association, in hopes of damaging the American League's chances of sticking, but the local National League magnates weren't having it, at least as far as putting an AA team in Philadelphia was concerned.

American League president Ban Johnson now said that work on the local AL ballpark would start by the “first of next week.”
