• Connie Mack signed Morris “Farmer” Steelman to back up Doc Powers while Harry Smith was out with appendicitis
• Steelman had been in a contract dispute with Brooklyn manager Ned Hanlon and had declared himself a free agent, a declaration Mack was more than happy to honor
