Local opinion

The Record was impressed by Ban Johnson's major league ambitions and added that the National League owners had neither the “brains” nor the “sand” to prevent his power play. Locally, they felt that the Connie Mack aggregation wouldn't be all that strong to start, but expected him to build a winner. The most immediate concern was finding a place to play. Though a lease had yet to be signed for a site, Johnson said work would begin on a ballpark by the 17th.

Mack on the hunt

Connie Mack was in Boston trying to persuade team captain Hugh Duffy to jump to Philadelphia. Duffy said he was willing, but his bosses said he was under contract to them and planned to keep it that way.
